Insurance designed for visitors coming from outside the EU

Visitor health insurance is designed for citizens of non-EU countries who travel to Germany for personal, family or professional reasons and need medical coverage during their stay.

It covers both short stays (tourism, family visits) and longer periods of up to 5 years, as long as you don't have access to the German public health system (GKV) or private insurance (PKV).

It is also one of the insurance policies accepted by the German embassy for applying for and renewing the Schengen VISA and the National VISA (Type D Visa).

What visitor health insurance covers

Comprehensive coverage that meets German legal requirements and the conditions set by the German embassy to grant a visa.

Medical fees

Reimbursement of visits to general practitioners, specialists, emergency rooms and outpatient treatment.

Hospitalisation

Reimbursement of hospital admission, surgery and inpatient stay, including emergency procedures.

Prescription medication

Coverage for medication prescribed by a doctor during the course of your treatment.

Repatriation

Additional expenses in case of death: transfer to the home country or burial in Germany up to the equivalent cost.

24/7 emergency assistance

Emergency medical care throughout your stay in Germany and the rest of the Schengen area.

Early cancellation

You can cancel the contract if you return to your home country early or start working as an employee with a salary above the minimum exempt threshold (€603 gross per month in 2026).

Schengen VISA

Short-stay visa (up to 90 days)

For tourism, family visits or business trips. Embassies require insurance valid throughout the Schengen area with a minimum coverage of €30,000 and repatriation included.

This insurance meets both requirements.

National Visa (Type D)

Long stays (more than 90 days)

Required for residence, studies, master's degrees or relocation for family reasons. Until you can access German social security, this insurance is valid as medical coverage.

Compatible with the application and renewal of the residence permit.

How the insurance works step by step

The German system works by reimbursement: you pay upfront and the insurer pays you back. Here's the full process.

1

You receive your policy as a PDF

Once we've completed your contract, we email you the PDF of your policy. Keep it on your phone or printed.

2

You choose your doctor freely

You can visit any GP, specialist or hospital you prefer. There is no closed list or mandatory medical network.

3

You show your policy and ID

At the appointment just show the PDF of your policy and your passport or ID.

4

You receive the invoice

The doctor sends the invoice, usually by post. You have around one month to pay it.

5

You forward the invoice to the insurer

Send a copy to the email address we will provide, including your policy number so they can identify you quickly.

6

You receive the refund and pay the doctor

The insurer transfers the amount to your account within about 3 weeks. With that money you pay the doctor.

Geographic coverage

Where you're covered with this insurance

Your coverage is not limited to Germany. You're insured throughout the Schengen area and in several European microstates.

  • The entire European Union.
  • Countries in the Schengen area.
  • Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City.
  • If your contract lasts at least 12 months, you are also covered up to 6 weeks per year in your home country.

Important: the insurance doesn't cover your home country (defined as your permanent residence before coming to Germany), except for the 6-week annual limit mentioned above.

When and how you can cancel

This insurance has no minimum commitment. You can cancel it if your personal or professional situation changes. These are the most common cases.

You start working as an employee

If your gross salary exceeds €603/month in 2026, you are no longer a minijob and must enter the German public health system (GKV). We help you process both the registration and cancellation.

You get married and join your partner's policy

If your husband or wife has public insurance, you can join as a family beneficiary. Just let us know and send us the welcome letter from the public insurer.

You return home or move country

You just need to send us the Abmeldung from the town hall (certificate confirming you no longer live at your address) or proof of your return flight.

You start university

If you enrol, you can switch to public student health insurance. We will need your enrolment confirmation to manage the change.

Frequently asked questions

We answer the most common questions about visitor health insurance and the VISA in Germany.

Is this insurance valid for extending my visa in Germany?

Yes. It is compatible with both the Schengen VISA (short stay) and the National Visa (Type D, long stay), as well as with residence permit renewal.

Do I have to pay the doctor directly?

The doctor sends the invoice by post to your home. You have about one month to pay it by bank transfer. In the meantime, you send a copy of the invoice to the insurer, who transfers the amount to your account within about 3 weeks. When you receive that money, you make the transfer to the doctor. It is important to always include your policy number when sending the invoice.

Can I freely choose my doctor?

Yes. You can visit any GP, specialist or hospital you prefer. There is no closed list or mandatory medical network.

How long can I keep this insurance?

Up to a maximum of 5 years. It is designed for limited stays, not for permanent residence. For unlimited residence, you must switch to German public health insurance (GKV) or private (PKV), depending on your situation.

Does the insurance cover outside Germany?

Yes. You are covered throughout the EU, in the Schengen area, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City. It does not cover your home country (defined as your permanent residence before coming to Germany). Exception: if your contract lasts at least 12 months, the insurance covers you for up to 6 weeks per year in your home country.

Is there a minimum commitment?

No. You can cancel at any time if your situation changes (you start working, get married, return home, start studying, etc.).

Does it include repatriation costs?

Yes. The insurance reimburses additional expenses in case of death: transfer to the home country or, alternatively, burial costs in Germany up to the equivalent of repatriation.

What minimum coverage does the embassy require for the Schengen VISA?

The German embassy requires insurance with minimum coverage of €30,000 and repatriation included, valid throughout the Schengen area. This insurance meets both requirements.

Do I need to pay the whole insurance in advance?

No. The premium is normally paid monthly by direct debit. We advise you on the available options depending on the insurer.
