Personalised, free, no-obligation advice.
We offer you the possibility to learn more about the approximate cost of private health insurance compared to the public system.
Please note that private health insurance is only available to employees earning at least €6,150 gross per month (or €73,800 per year — €77,400 from 2026) and to self-employed professionals (with no income limit).
Coverage: GKV vs. PKV
In general, the public system (GKV) covers doctor visits, treatments, and hospital stays, similar to most other countries.
However, private insurance (PKV) offers significantly broader benefits:
Superior dental coverage
Many private insurance plans cover high-end dental treatments — such as implants, ceramic crowns, and advanced prosthetics — at much higher reimbursement rates, well above the legal standard.
Private treatments and priority care in hospitals
- Private patients often have the option to receive treatment from the head physician (Chefarzt) when hospitalized.
- They can also stay in single or double rooms instead of shared hospital wards.
- Waiting times for appointments and procedures are generally shorter.
Greater access to new therapies and medical innovations
Private policyholders frequently have access to innovative medical treatments and technologies that may not be covered by public health insurance.
Freedom to choose your doctors, specialists, and clinics
They usually enjoy direct access to specialists without a referral and can choose the clinic or hospital they prefer (depending on the terms of their contract), rather than being limited to the routes established by public insurers.
International medical coverage (outside the EU)
Some private plans also include coverage while travelling abroad, offering great value for people who travel frequently.
When can I switch to private health insurance?
You can change your insurance provider within a two-month period, usually by giving 60 days’ notice.
If you don’t yet have health insurance, you can join a private plan immediately.
Save on taxes and build your future
Since 2005, German law has made it possible to combine tax savings with wealth creation.
The goal is to help both employees and self-employed professionals build capital that provides monthly income in retirement.
For every €100 you invest each month,
you can save about €40 in taxes.
In practice, you contribute €60, but €100 is invested on your behalf.
At Bramex e.K., we help you compare options, optimize your insurance, and discover how to reduce your taxes in Germany.
