If you're a university student: public student insurance or temporary private
As an enrolled university student you have two possible paths. We explain what each one offers so you can choose with peace of mind, and with us by your side.
- For enrolled students under 30 (or before the 14th semester).
- Fixed reduced student rate.
- Standard public-system coverage.
- No longer applies once you turn 30 or pass the 14th semester.
- For over-30s, non-enrolled students or those who want broader coverage.
- Broader coverage depending on the plan (dental, specialists…).
- Valid for the visa and adaptable to your stay.
- The option when you can't access the KVdS.
Whatever your case, we assess it with you and help you choose.

Frequently asked questions
Is health insurance mandatory to study in Germany?
Yes. Health insurance is mandatory in Germany from day one and is a requirement for university enrolment and for the study visa. Without valid cover you can't formalise your stay.
Which insurance do I need for my type of student?
It depends on your profile: enrolled university students under 30 usually access public student insurance (KVdS); those over 30 or not enrolled, a temporary private one; and language students, au pairs and interns need temporary private insurance. The table on this page takes you to your case.
Up to what age can I use public student insurance (KVdS)?
As a general rule, up to age 30 or the 14th semester. After that you move to a voluntary or temporary private insurance, and we help you make the switch smoothly.
What if I'm coming for a German course or as an au pair?
In that case you aren't enrolled at a university, so you need a temporary private insurance, from €36/month and valid for the visa. It also covers Work & Travel participants and interns.
How much does health insurance for students in Germany cost?
It depends on the profile. Public student insurance has a fixed reduced rate; the temporary one for language students starts at €36/month; and temporary private varies by age and coverage. We look at your case and tell you the real cost.
Does Bramex help me choose and sign up? Is there a cost?
Yes, and it's free. We analyse the insurers, choose the one that fits you best by coverage, service and rate, and handle the insurance for you. All free and in your language.
