What does home insurance cover in Germany?
Home insurance in Germany (Hausratversicherung) covers your personal belongings inside your home: furniture, appliances, clothing, jewellery, high-value watches and other personal items. Your bicycle can also be included as an optional add-on.
It is important to understand that it only covers items that belong to you. If the kitchen is part of the rented flat and included in the rent, it is not covered by this insurance. For damage you may cause to the landlord's property, you also need personal liability insurance.
Fire
Damage caused by fire, lightning, explosion or implosion affecting your belongings.
Water damage
Damage from flooding, burst pipes or water ingress that damages your possessions.
Theft
Loss of belongings due to burglary or theft in your home.
Natural events
Damage caused by storms, hail or other adverse weather conditions.
Bicycle (optional)
You can add bicycle cover as an optional complement to your home insurance.
Glass (optional)
Breakage of windows, glazed doors and the ceramic hob in your kitchen.
Home insurance (Hausratversicherung)
Covers all your personal belongings inside the home against fire, water damage, theft and natural events. Furniture, appliances, clothing, jewellery and valuables are all protected. The price depends on the flat's square footage and the value of the insured items. A family policy typically costs between €80 and €120 per year.

Glass insurance (Glasversicherung)
Covers accidental breakage of glass in your home: windows, glazed doors connected to the façade and the ceramic hob in the kitchen. It can be taken out independently of home insurance or added as a complement. If the kitchen belongs to the landlord and the ceramic hob breaks, the glass insurance covers the costs.
- Window and door glass
- Façade panels
- Kitchen ceramic hob
- Can be taken out independently
- Price depends on flat size and number of windows
