What is life insurance in Germany and what is it for?
Life insurance in Germany is always recommended when you have family members or other people who depend on your income. In the event of your death, the agreed sum is paid to the beneficiaries you have named, ensuring their financial security for as long as they need to adapt.
This also applies if you regularly send money to family in your home country. The insurance covers these situations too, protecting their financial wellbeing if you were no longer there.
"Health is like money — we never have a true idea of its value until we lose it."
— Josh Billings
When should you take out life insurance?
These are the most common situations where life insurance makes a real difference:
You have financial dependants
Children, a spouse or parents who rely on your income for their daily needs.
You are the main breadwinner
Your income is essential to maintaining your household and your family's standard of living.
You have a mortgage or loan
Banks often require life insurance to guarantee loan repayment in the event of your death.
You own a business
Protect business continuity and safeguard your partners and employees as part of a succession plan.
You want to secure your children's education
Ensure your children can afford their university education regardless of what happens.
You work in a high-risk sector
If your job carries a higher risk of fatal accidents, life insurance is especially valuable.
You are young and healthy
Taking out cover when you are young and in good health is cheaper and secures your eligibility before any health issues arise.
Estate planning
Distribute your assets according to your wishes and potentially offer tax advantages to your beneficiaries.
To cover funeral costs
Ensure funeral expenses do not become an additional financial burden for your family.

How life insurance works in Germany
Protection for your family
In the event of your death, the insurance company pays the agreed sum to the beneficiaries you have named. You decide who they are and what share each receives. You can change beneficiaries and distribution at any time with a simple written notification.
Security for your mortgage
If you buy a property and finance it with a loan, the bank usually requires life insurance to guarantee repayment in the event of your death. The insurer pays the bank all or part of the agreed sum, as set out in your agreement.

Frequently asked questions about life insurance in Germany
When is life insurance recommended in Germany?
Whenever other people depend on your income: your partner, your children, your parents or other family members. Also when you have significant debts such as a mortgage, or when you want to plan your estate.
Can I split the insured sum between several people?
Yes. You decide how it is distributed. The insurer records the names and percentages of each beneficiary in the contract, and the sum is paid proportionally to each one.
Can I change the beneficiaries at any time?
Yes. You can change the beneficiaries and the distribution whenever you like. A written declaration to the insurance company is all that is needed.
Can I cancel the life insurance at any time?
Yes. You can cancel at any time with a standard notice period of 3 months.
I am from a non-EU country. Can I take out life insurance in Germany?
If you are not an EU citizen, you need a permanent residence permit to take out life insurance in Germany.
How long should the contract run?
At least for as long as your family members depend on your income — until your children are financially independent, until you retire, or until your mortgage is paid off. You decide the duration freely.
Do the premiums change over time?
In general, the contributions agreed at the start of the contract do not change during its term.
Can I change the insured sum during the contract?
Reducing it is possible at any time. Increasing it normally requires a new health check. If the insurance is linked to a mortgage, you can also agree on a gradual reduction of the insured sum as you pay off the loan.
What are the health requirements to take out the policy?
You generally need to be in good health at the time of signing: no serious illnesses in the past 5 years and no regular medication. If you have a pre-existing condition, the insurance may still be possible at a higher premium or with a reduced sum, depending on your individual case.
How much should I insure for?
Consider how much money your family would need to maintain their standard of living during the period they would be without your income. If the insurance is to cover a loan, the sum is based on the outstanding loan amount.
