Health insurance for job seekers and German language students: what you need to know

If you have arrived in Germany and are looking for work or studying the language, health insurance for job seekers and German language students is the most suitable option for your situation. In Germany, health coverage is mandatory regardless of whether you are working or not, and there are two main options: public health insurance and private temporary insurance. Here we explain which one suits you and why.

This private temporary insurance covers basic medical, dental and hospital care, with premiums ranging from €35 to €105 per month depending on your age and plan, and it is accepted for German visa applications.

Public or temporary insurance? Key differences

Voluntary public insurance (GKV)

  • Cost: approx. €200/month while not working
  • Requires having had public insurance in your home country
  • You must not have been in Germany too long without applying
  • If working a Minijob (up to €538 gross), you still pay ~€200/month
  • Full coverage under the German public health system

Private temporary insurance

  • Cost: between €35 and €105/month based on age and plan
  • No prior insurance requirements from your home country
  • Valid for German visa applications
  • Valid while job-seeking or studying German (up to 5 years)
  • Once you find work, we cancel it and switch you to public insurance

Frequently asked questions about temporary health insurance

When is temporary insurance the right option for job seekers and German language students?

It is the most suitable option if you have come to Germany to do a German course and/or are actively looking for work. It is a real, affordable alternative to voluntary public insurance — especially if you do not meet the Krankenkasse requirements or the cost of public insurance (~€200/month) does not fit your situation.

I am already in Germany. Can I still take out this insurance?

Yes, it is possible to take it out even if you are already in Germany. However, you must not have any active treatment for a serious illness at the time of sign-up. If that were the case, we would need to explore other options. This insurance covers illnesses that arise after the policy starts, not pre-existing ones.

How much does temporary health insurance cost?

The cost depends mainly on your age and the plan you choose. There is a basic plan and a premium plan with different coverage levels. Prices range from €35 to €105 per month. You can check all available rates at: Temporary private health insurance rates.

How long can I keep this insurance?

You can take it out for as long as you need, up to a maximum of 5 years. You decide the start and end dates yourself. If you find work before the contract ends, we cancel it at no cost and handle the switch to public employees' insurance.

Is switching from temporary to public insurance complicated once I find work?

Not at all. As soon as you find a job paying more than €538 gross per month, we find the most suitable Krankenkasse for you and handle the cancellation of your temporary policy — all free of charge. This type of insurance has no issues transitioning to public employees' insurance.

When can I cancel the temporary insurance?

The insurance can be cancelled before its end date for three reasons: (1) you start working as an employee earning more than €538 gross per month, (2) you return to your home country before the agreed date, or (3) you get married and join your spouse's insurance. In none of these cases are there any cancellation fees.

Do I get a health insurance card? Is there a list of approved doctors?

There is no physical health card, but once you have taken out the insurance we send you all the information and documentation you need to present at the doctor by email. There is also no closed list of doctors — you can go to whichever doctor suits you best.

What are the requirements for this temporary insurance?

Insurers do not accept people who need active treatment for chronic illnesses or long-term conditions. We also recommend not making any medical appointments during the first month after signing up. This insurance is designed for people doing a German course and/or actively looking for work. It is not a long-term substitute for public health insurance.
