What is personal liability insurance in Germany and why does it matter?
Personal liability insurance in Germany (Haftpflichtversicherung) protects you against the financial consequences of accidental damage you cause to others in everyday life. While it is not legally required, it is one of the most widely recommended and taken-out insurances in Germany.
Under Article 823 of the German Civil Code, individuals are legally obliged to cover any damage they unintentionally cause to others. Without this insurance, a simple everyday accident can lead to claims worth thousands of euros that you would have to pay out of your own pocket. The coverage-to-price ratio is extremely favourable: typically between €45 and €100 per year.
Everyday situations this insurance covers
Real examples of what can happen and how the Haftpflichtversicherung protects you:
🏠 During a house move
You move into a new flat and damage the building's staircase while carrying furniture. The insurance covers the repair costs.
🚲 On your bike
You accidentally scratch a car or cause an incident with a pedestrian. Any costs arising from the accident are covered by your policy.
🌧️ On your balcony
During a storm, a plant pot falls from your balcony and injures someone below. If a claim is made against you, you are covered.
🔑 Lost keys
You lose your house or work keys and the locks of the entire building have to be replaced. With the right coverage, those costs are covered by the insurance.

Frequently asked questions about Haftpflichtversicherung
Why do I need personal liability insurance in Germany?
Landlords often ask for this insurance or view it positively when renting a flat. Beyond that, it protects you in any situation where you accidentally cause physical, material or financial damage to someone else. Given the low annual cost compared to the coverage it provides, it is always worth having.
How much does personal liability insurance cost in Germany?
The exact price depends on factors such as whether you want coverage just for yourself or for your whole family. Policies of this type typically cost between €45 and €100 per year, which is extremely good value given that coverage can reach several million euros.
How long does the contract last?
The contract usually runs for one year and renews automatically year on year, unless cancelled with 3 months' notice.
Does it cover me abroad?
Coverage is valid across all of Europe and, in some cases, worldwide. However, time spent outside Germany cannot exceed a few weeks per year. Your main residence must remain in Germany. For longer stays or extended holidays, it is best to complement it with travel insurance.
Can I include my children in the policy?
Yes. A notification to the insurance company is all it takes. Bear in mind that adding more people to the contract may lead to a price increase.
With or without excess?
We recommend taking out a policy without excess. Prices remain very affordable and this way you will not have to pay any additional amount out of pocket if you need to make a claim. We calculate all offers without excess as standard.
What minimum coverage should I choose?
We recommend a minimum coverage of €10 million, with €50 million or more being ideal in certain cases. The policy should cover: personal injury, property damage, financial loss, damage to a rented flat, and loss of private or work keys.
Important things to consider when taking out your Haftpflichtversicherung
Liability when renting a flat
As a tenant, you are responsible for any accidental damage you cause to the property. A flooding caused by a tap left open, for example, can result in a claim worth thousands of euros. The Haftpflichtversicherung covers these damages and protects you from claims by the landlord or neighbours.
As a landlord, you also have civil liabilities. You must keep the property in safe, habitable condition. If a tenant suffers harm due to your negligence, you may be held liable.
With or without excess?
We always recommend taking out a policy without excess. The price remains very affordable and, this way, if you ever need to use the insurance you will not have to pay any additional amount. We calculate all our offers without excess by default.
Are you self-employed?
If you work as a freelancer, personal liability insurance is not enough. There is a specific insurance designed to cover your professional activity as a self-employed person.
Liability insurance for freelancersLooking for home insurance too?
Personal liability insurance does not cover damage to your own belongings. If you want to protect the contents of your home, you need a separate home insurance policy.
